THE BACARDI BUILDING, HAVANA
The Bacardi Building is an Art Deco landmark, designed by architects Rodriguez-Castells and Ruenes, completed in 1930 and located in Las Murallas in Old Havana.
The building was built to be the head office of the Bacardi Rum Company and was the result of an architectural design competition organized by the Bacardi Company. Construction of the building began in January 1930 and was completed 300 days later in December of the same year. At the very top of the building there is a bronze sculpture of the company logo, a fruit bat and panel sculptures of sirens.
The mezzanine area contained a fine dining restaurant overlooking the first floor bar that was a popular venue for Havana’s rich and famous in the 1930s. The first floor walls, floor and ceiling are adorned with pink granite from Bavaria and the two halls with green marble imported from Italy. The construction work was carried out by a German firm, Grasyma, that took great care in ensuring the quality of the finish of the building and that it was completed within the 300 day deadline.
