KAUFMANN HOUSE – CEDAR LAKE RESIDENCE, 1935-1936,

20 Park Lane, Minneapolis, MN 55416, USA 🇺🇸
Located on Cedar Lake on the west side of Minneapolis,
Original Architect: Wessel, James Brunet & Klein
Inspired by modern architecture at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, V. Mel Kaufmann hired architect James Brunet to design an International-style home on Cedar Lake, reflecting Le Corbusier’s concept of a “Machine for Living” with its minimalist stucco exterior and flat roof. Surrounded by traditional homes, the house stood out for its modern design.
The house has changed hands a few times since. The Lacey family added an office, expanded the bathrooms, updated the balconies and installed a stair tower, all of which blended with the original facade.
In 2011, the home underwent a significant expansion by Peterssen/Keller Architecture, including the addition of a third floor with a master suite, terrace, and panoramic views, all while maintaining the integrity of the original facade. They worked closely with the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission and Streeter.
Awarded in 2012: AIA -State/Regional Awards; Historic Preservation Award
“National Register of Historic Places – Nomination Form,” December 1983.
