Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, in honor of the commodities exchanged in the Chicago Board of Trade building below. The Chicago Board of Trade, 141 West Jackson Boulevard, is an Art Deco building that is capped by a 31-foot tall statue of the Roman goddess. Ceres is faceless because its sculptor, John Storrs, believed that the forty-five story building would be sufficiently taller than any other nearby structure and as a result that no one would be able to see the sculpture’s face anyway. Some say Storrs wanted her to be faceless intentionally because it fit the streamlined lines of Art Deco. She is lovely with or without her face.
