The two winged figures flanking the 142-foot flagpole at the Hoover Dam’s dedication monument on the Nevada side are called the Winged Figures of the Republic by Norwegian immigrant sculptor Oskar J. W. Hansen. The figures are part angel and part symbol of human strength, and Hansen described them as representing “the immutable calm of intellectual resolution, and the enormous power of trained physical strength, equally enthroned in placid triumph of scientific accomplishment”. They also honor the nation’s aspirations and growth as it transforms a dry desert.
