Haerens Mansion

Name:Haerens Mansion

Address:Avenue Brugmann 384

City/Neighborhood:Uccle

Beautiful Mansion in Art Deco style, designed in 1928, by architect Antoine Courtens, for Robert Haerens, engineer at the Empain Group.

During the same year, Antoine Courtens built this hotel as well as Le Palais de la Folle Chanson building, which represented some of the architect’s major works.

He was inspired by the decorative repertoire of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, whose work he discovered thanks to Victor Horta, who stayed in the United States from 1916 to 19 and with whom he collaborated on several occasions.

This is especially visible in the friezes that crown the facades and the corner tower.

This type of ornament is found in the Palais de Beaux-Arts, on which Courtens worked with Victor Horta.

Also noteworthy is the beautiful hammered wrought iron front door, on the Brugmann side. The building was restored at great expense in 2009/10 thanks to subsidies allocated by the Brussels-Capital Region, and is now occupied by offices (2021).

Listed building in August 1988
