This shawl design is inspired by my maternal grandmother, Edna Wilson Ruggles, who was my creative mentor from the time I was very young. Edna was brilliantly creative and talented and did every kind of handwork imaginable, and when I was fourteen she taught me crewel embroidery which I was passionate about for many years. She also taught me to knit when I was a child, so her gifts to me were invaluable. She had a wonderful business on her own, creating her beautiful crewel embroidery designs and transforming them into pillows, pincushions and other lovely items that she shipped all over the country to shops or to individuals requesting custom items. The leafy and flowery motifs that I incorporated into this shawl pattern remind me of her designs, which were also inspired by her own love of gardening and nature. The shawl is knit using a typical triangular shawl construction. For some added visual interest, there are panels with a leaf design on either side of the shawl and down the center. The lace edging is then knit directly onto the bottom edge of the shawl. This pattern is designed to be knit with any weight/gauge of yarn and any size needles to whatever measurements you desire. The suggested materials and gauge provided in the instructions were used to create the shawl in this photo, which was made by working Chart C four times and measures 50”W x 22” from center of upper edge to tip of lower edge.
